Pimples. Whiteheads. Blackheads. They're all acne and, if you’ve got it, you know how it can affect your confidence.
Acne is caused by clogged pores. Your pores are openings to follicles which contain a hair and an oil gland. The oil glands lubricate skin and remove old skin cells. Sometimes, the glands produce too much oil, causing the pores to become blocked and allowing dirt and bacteria to build up.
Acne is most common in teenagers, but adults can struggle with it too.
To manage your acne at home, wash the affected areas with a mild, non-drying soap, such as Dove or Neutrogena, but avoid scrubbing. Afterward, apply a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid medication.
And your mother was right: don’t pick at pimples. Popping them can cause a deep infection and lead to scarring.
Depending on the severity of your acne, your physician may prescribe an antibiotic, either oral or topical, or other type of medication.
Other treatments include photodynamic therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
